Huawei’s charm offensive

Ryan Ding, head of Huawei’s carrier business group, says a “global and comprehensive” plan will be approved internally by the end of March.

“In Q2 we will talk to all our stakeholders, including UK stakeholders, about such a plan and hopefully by the end of the first half of this year we will complete the high level design of such plan,” said Ding.

Yesterday U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that members of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing group which use Huawei gear would not share information with the US.

Of the Five Eyes, Australia, the US  and New Zealand have already barred Huawei from their 5G programmes while the UK and Canada are still considering it.

In Canada, Eric Li, president of Huawei Canada, said that the company would add 200 jobs to its Canadian R&D operation and increase its research budget in Canada by $19 million.

Li also said that IP developed in Canada stays in Canada.

As for the UK 5G market, Ryan Ding says: “I believe that a 5G market without Huawei is like the English Premier League without Manchester United.”
